Belize: The World's Largest Sea Hole
The Great Blue Hole is the most recognizable dive site on Earth. Visible from space, this perfectly circular sinkhole in the middle of Lighthouse Reef is a geological wonder. It wasn’t always underwater; thousands of years ago, it was a massive dry cave system. When the ocean levels rose, the roof collapsed, creating a vertical shaft that drops over 120 meters (400 feet) into the dark. Diving here isn't about colorful coral; it's about the eerie, gothic beauty of swimming among massive stalactites that hang like chandeliers in the deep, often accompanied by circling Caribbean Reef Sharks.

This design captures the sheer scale of the world's largest sea hole. While the dive is famous, the most iconic view is from the air. We illustrated the Great Blue Hole from a high-angle aerial perspective to showcase its perfect circular shape and the dramatic contrast between the deep blue interior and the shallow turquoise reef. To give it a sense of massive scale, we included a tiny dive boat motoring across the rim, emphasizing just how colossal this natural formation really is.

Belize sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the northern hemisphere, and it is best known for the Great Blue Hole — a near-perfect circular sinkhole visible from the air, which collapsed from a dry cave system when sea levels rose. As a dive it is a deep, dark descent to see enormous stalactites at around 40 metres, with little marine life; people go for the geology and the story. The surrounding atolls do the everyday work: Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe and Half Moon Caye offer walls, coral and healthy fish.

Is the Great Blue Hole worth diving?
Honestly, it depends on your expectations. The dive is a descent to around 40 metres along a sheer wall to see huge stalactites left from when the cave was dry, in dark water with very little marine life. As a piece of geology and a bucket-list tick it is remarkable; as a dive on its own terms, many divers find the surrounding atoll reefs more rewarding. Most trips combine it with two dives on Lighthouse Reef, which is the right way to do it.
When can you see whale sharks in Belize?
Whale sharks visit Gladden Spit off Placencia in spring, broadly from March to June, drawn by spawning aggregations of snapper around the full moons. Encounters are managed under a permit system with limited operators and defined seasons. Sightings are genuinely seasonal and weather-dependent rather than guaranteed, so treat it as a chance rather than a certainty when planning.
