Dauin is where you go when you’re done looking at the "big stuff" and want to have your mind blown by the bizarre. Located on the coast of Negros Oriental (just down the road from Apo Island), this black sand coastline looks unassuming from the beach, but underwater, it is a macro metropolis. This is world-class muck diving, where you hunt for critters that look like they were designed by a sci-fi artist. It’s a slow-paced, treasure-hunt style of diving where patience rewards you with encounters with the ocean’s most camouflage-obsessed oddballs.
Why We Chose This Sticker Design
We had to choose the Flamboyant Cuttlefish as the ambassador for Dauin because it is the ultimate symbol of the region's "weird and wonderful" vibe. We illustrated this tiny cephalopod in full display mode, flashing those vibrant yellows, magentas, and dark purples that warn predators to back off. To capture the true essence of a muck dive, we set the scene on a dark, sandy bottom with shafts of light filtering down, emphasizing how these colorful gems pop against the monochrome volcanic sand. It’s a design that celebrates the small, the strange, and the spectacular.
Diving Dauin
Dauin, on the south-east coast of Negros near Dumaguete, is the Philippines' most convenient muck diving base. A string of black-sand sites runs along the shore, most of them a five-minute boat ride from the resorts, holding frogfish, seahorses, mimic octopus and a nudibranch list that keeps photographers busy for a week. What makes Dauin especially attractive is what sits next door: Apo Island, one of the country's great reef and turtle dives, is a short crossing away, so a trip can combine muck and reef without moving base.

Is Dauin good for muck diving beginners?
It is one of the easiest places to start. Sites are shallow, close to shore, almost always calm and reached in a few minutes by banca boat, so there is very little to manage beyond buoyancy — which matters, since hovering over silt without stirring it is the core skill. Guides here are highly experienced at spotting, and being able to do three or four relaxed dives a day makes it a productive place to learn the discipline.
Can you dive Apo Island from Dauin?
Yes, and it is the main reason to base yourself here. Apo Island lies a boat crossing of roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the Dauin coast, and most resorts run trips several times a week. That gives you the best of both: black-sand critter diving on your doorstep and one of the Philippines’ finest hard-coral and turtle sites within easy reach. Marine sanctuary fees apply for Apo.
